What is Kon Slaprea?

Kon Slaprea is the “little spoon” or little sister of the original food festival Slaprea, first held in March 2017 but that doesn’t mean Kon Slaprea is small because more than 30,000 festival-goers are expected to attend over the weekend. And I am one of them !

The aim of Kon Slaprea is to nurture a passion for all things food while being mindful of sustainability. The theme of this year’s festival is “For the Love of Food”, which redefines food as nourishment that is easy on the eyes, tastebuds, plus health of people and planet. While festival-goers get a taste of what they love, vendors enhance the sustainability of their operations.

The minds behind Kon Slaprea

Kon Slaprea is proudly brought to you by research, marketing and training specialists, The Idea Consultancy Co., Ltd who are delighted to welcome some big names this year, including companies and government ministries who share the same vision.

Key partners and sponsors include soft drinks giant Pepsi, food and entertainment center The Food Palace, fast food chain Lucky Burger, healthcare provider Khema Global and Cambodia’s first food search engine, Foodbuzz. As in previous festival editions, Kon Slaprea continues to receive support from the Ministry of Commerce, Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport, Ministry of Tourism, and the City Hall, with warm thanks and appreciation for this year’s new partner, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

UNDP is working towards creating a Circular Economy in Cambodia by promoting the 4Rs (refuse, reduce, reuse, recycle) especially in regard to plastic. This aligns perfectly with Kon Slaprea’s goal to be 100% single-use plastic-free. The festival will be an opportunity to practice food safety and sustainability, through capacity building on antimicrobial resistance and waste separation, plus provision of eco-friendly alternatives to plastic packaging.

Kon Slaprea coincides with another big event for Cambodia: the Pétanque World Championships. Scheduled to take place from 17 to 24 November, the Championships will bring hundreds of visitors, including athletes from over 40 countries, to the Olympic Stadium, including Cambodian champions, Ouk Sreymom and three-time gold medal winner Keo Leng.
